Twin Pregnancy

Twin pregnancies can be diagnosed in as early as the tenth or twelfth week after fertilization. The first sign that can be noticed from the mother is a uterus that is larger than those who have single pregnancies. Another is that two fetal heartbeats will be detected during the third or fourth month of the pregnancy.

Can laboratory tests detect twins?

Some laboratory tests can detect twins as well. When a twin pregnancy is suspected, an ultrasound test should be done in order to verify the diagnosis. Upon diagnosis, the mother should expect the following:

Weight gain

Because of a larger uterus and because there are two babies to support inside the womb, more weight gain can be expected from the mother. Usually, a woman having twin pregnancy will gain as much as ten pounds during the first trimester.

In the second trimester, another ten to fifteen pounds can be added. Before delivering the babies, the mother is expected to have gained a total of thirty five to forty five pounds.

Intense signs and symptoms

A woman bearing two babies in her womb will experience more intense signs of pregnancy. She will have frequent morning sickness syndromes and more recurrent headaches. She will also be more vulnerable to fatigue, abdominal pain, pelvic cramps, shortness of breath, and insomnia.

Increased vulnerability to complications

Twin pregnancy poses more risks and dangers for the mother and her babies. Primary of these complications include preterm labor due to increased contractions that cause the cervix to open.

Preterm labor may cause:

  • low birth weight
  • breathing and digestive problems
  • developmental and learning disabilities

Increased need for nutrients

Women who are pregnant with a single baby already need large doses of calcium, iron, protein, and folic acid in their bodies. However, for those who have twin pregnancies, larger doses of those nutrients are needed. Thus, women with pregnancies should make sure that they take their daily prenatal vitamins and iron supplements, apart from eating a well-balanced diet.
