Female Infertility

Female infertility is attributed to various causes. Therefore, the chosen infertility treatment will depend on the cause of female infertility. If the female infertility is caused by irregular or abnormal ovulation, then the woman undergoes hormonal therapy. Ovulation is the time when the woman’s ovaries produce mature eggs that will travel through the fallopian tubes towards the uterus. This process is dictated by hormones. Thus, irregular ovulation is due to hormonal imbalance.

Blocked fallopian tubes

If the woman has blocked fallopian tubes, the infertility is due to the inability of the egg to reach the uterus and be met by a sperm. The treatment for this is usually a tubal surgery. But if the blockage is severe, an option to consider is IVF or in vitro fertilization. In IVF, eggs are retrieved from the woman’s ovaries and fertilized in the laboratory using the sperm of her male partner. Then, the fertilized egg or the embryo is implanted inside the woman’s uterus.

Viable infertility treatment?

If the cause of the female infertility is not known, the IVF is still a viable infertility treatment. A variation of the IVF is called the GIFT or the gamete intrafallopian transfer. The procedure is similar except for the implantation. Instead of implanting the embryo in the uterus, it is transferred into the fallopian tube.
