Lungs and immune system
Your baby may be coming out any time now, although it would be premature. The good news is that thanks to your baby’s developed lungs and immune system, your baby will have a 90% chance of survival if born this week.
What’s Going on with the Baby
Fetal Kick Counts
Your baby is now sensitive to temperature, so don’t be surprised if you get a sudden kick after you place a hot compress over your belly. Remember, he or she can now feel the difference. Your baby’s movements will actually peak this week, and will change afterwards both in quantity and quality. You should learn to do the Fetal Kick Counts (see below for more details) to check your baby’s movements. You should be able to feel a healthy baby move ten times in four hours, so anything less should be reported to your doctor.
Baby’s face
Your baby’s face will smoothen out this week and will finally get rid of the old-man wrinkles. He or she will now weigh about 1.7 kilograms, mostly from fat and muscle tissue. If your baby is born this week, you may expect some difficulties with nursing or sucking, but this should be dealt with by proper medical attention.
What’s Going on with Mommy
Uterus squeezing on internal organs
Your uterus is now 5 inches above your belly button and is literally squeezing out all your other internal organs, which can cause difficulty in breathing, constipation, indigestion and even heartburn. Eating small meals frequently as opposed to the usual two or three major meals may help alleviate the heartburn and indigestion.
Monitoring baby’s movements
As earlier mentioned, the Fetal Kick Counts test is used to monitor your baby’s movements. To do this, pick the time of the day when your baby is most active. Note every time you feel any kind of movement (except for hiccups) and write down the time for every tenth movement.
Now for Daddy
Let your partner rest as much as she needs to. Once in a while, do something sweet such as bringing her breakfast in bed.
