3 weeks pregnant

It’s getting more exciting now since your baby’s conception will be happening this week!

What’s Going on with the Baby

Sperm meeting the egg in the fallopian tube

At last, daddy’s sperm will be meeting mommy’s egg in the fallopian tube, and the fertilized egg will now begin the journey to the uterus. Throughout this journey, which could take 7-10 days, cell division will start taking place. Once implanted in the uterus, the fertilized egg will now be called a blastocyst, and measures around 0.1 to 0.2 millimeters in diameter.

Only one sperm can enter the ovum to be able to fertilize it.

Although many sperm may penetrate the outer layer of the egg, only one sperm will be able to successfully enter the ovum to be able to fertilize it. The chromosome of the parents will join together in the middle of the ovum and begin forming the baby’s own chromosome. Whether your baby is a boy or girl depends on the sex chromosome in daddy’s sperm.

Fertilized by two different sperms

If two eggs are fertilized by two different sperms (dizygotic), the result would be fraternal twins who look just like normal siblings. If only one egg is fertilized and divides into two (monozygotic), the result would be identical twins.

What’s Going on with Mommy

Conception is now happening in your fallopian tube! A baby will be growing very, very soon! Some mothers experience spotting or bleeding during this week, when the blastocyst implants itself in the uterine lining. This is quite normal, although it never hurts to go to the doctor for a check up if you’re worried about complications.

Immunosuppressant protein

Your body will begin to release an immunosuppressant protein which is called EPF (Early Pregnancy Factor), which prevents your body from attacking your baby and treating it as a foreign object or invader.

Now for Daddy

A useful advice for Dads is to continue with your efforts towards conception this week. Enjoy the opportunity to be with your partner , trying to begin a new life between the two of you. Remember also that your sex life will drastically change once she does get pregnant.
