Third trimester

Welcome to the third trimester and your seventh month of pregnancy! By this time, you would probably be meeting with your doctor every two weeks or so.

What’s Going on with the Baby

Androgen and Estrogen

Your baby will be blinking fairly often during this week, and will respond to changes from dark to light. Their bone marrows are now beginning to produce red blood cells, and their adrenal glands are starting to produce androgen and estrogen. These hormones stimulate the mother’s hormones into producing milk. Muscle tone is improving, and your baby is gaining a lot of weight (weighing in at 1 kilogram), with about 3% of body fat. If born on the seventh month, your baby has a 90% chance of survival with medical attention, which is good news for everyone.

What’s Going on with Mommy

Test for gestational diabetes

Your uterus is now around 3 inches above your navel, and your average weight gain is from 17 to 24 pounds. You should have a glucose tolerance test taken for gestational diabetes
, which is caused by the hormones your body produced during pregnancy. These hormones could cause your blood sugar to rise dangerously, which could increase the risk of complications.

Doctor’s appointment

As mentioned earlier, you will need to have a doctor’s appointment every two weeks until the 36th week, after which you’ll need a weekly appointment. Your doctor will check your weight and blood pressure, and check your urine for signs of infection, protein and sugar. If there are any high-risk complications arising during this period such as pre-eclampsia, placenta previa and pregnancy-induced hypertension, you may be required to visit the doctor more often.

Now for Daddy

Be sure to join your partner in her doctor’s appointment as often as possible, and don’t be shy to ask if you have any questions. If necessary, list down all the things that are bothering you so that you can get the answers from your doctor.
