24 weeks pregnant

It’s another great week, although you’re now approaching the beginning of the more difficult third trimester. The best advice for the expectant parents at this point is to enjoy it while it’s good.

What’s Going on with the Baby

Ears and fingernails are now formed.

The ears and fingernails are now completely formed in your baby, and if you’re having a boy, his testicles are now on their 3-day-long trip from the abdominal wall to the scrotum. Although your baby is still breathing in amniotic fluid, the lung walls are now secreting a substance called a surfactant. This is a surface-activated fat which helps the baby lungs expand with oxygen after delivery. The baby will now be about 30 centimeters tall and about 595 grams heavy. Although the baby has a chance of survival in case of premature labor, the chances still get better and better each passing week.

What’s Going on with Mommy

Premature labors caused by dehydration?

Make sure you drink lots and lots of water during this time. Many premature labors occur during summer, and it is thought that this may be because the mother was dehydrated. To be safe, read more about the warning signs of premature labor so that you’ll be prepared in case this happens to you. As with every other medical emergency, the sooner you recognize the symptoms, the sooner you can get medical attention, and the better will be the chances for survival for you and your little baby.

Trying to sleep

Your baby is now so active that you may be losing sleep. In fact, friends and family can now feel the baby’s movements through your belly. If you can’t sleep, keep trying to find a more comfortable sleeping position, try a specially designed pregnancy pillow or just arrange your pillows in such a way as to keep your belly back and legs supported.

Now for Daddy

You’re probably feeling proud and excited over the baby. Be sure to let your partner know how you’re feeling.
