17 weeks pregnant

You’re now beginning the fifth month of your pregnancy. Can you believe how fast time flies when you’re expecting a baby?

What’s Going on with the Baby

Baby fat starting to form

Fat is now starting to form underneath your baby’s skin, which will account for about 2-6% of his or her total body weight upon birth. The fat is important since this will help them maintain their body temperature when they’re out of your womb. By this time, the baby will be weighing about 142 grams and is heavier than the placenta. The heart is now pumping about 25 quarts of blood daily. The brain development continues, and the reflexes are in place. The baby is now sucking on his thumb, swallowing amniotic fluid and blinking every once in a while. Although the ears are not yet fully developed, the sense of hearing is already there, and sudden loud noises could startle the baby.

What’s Going on with Mommy

Increased blood volume

Due to the increased blood volume, you may notice that your body secretions are increasing as well. The uterus is now about 1 ½ to 2 inches below your belly button, or about midway between your pubic bone and navel. Don’t worry too much if you have regular nasal congestion, are sweating more profusely, and have increased vaginal discharge. This is all part of pregnancy, and will subside after you’ve given birth.

Round ligament pain

Some mothers report worse cases of round ligament pain during this week. If you’re suffering from this, try sleeping on your side instead of lying on your back. The problem with lying on your back is that it compresses your pelvic veins, which would decrease the blood circulation in the lower half of your body.

Now for Daddy

If you haven’t checked your finances yet, you’d better start planning for the future. After all, in a just a few more months, you’ll have “another mouth to feed.” Make sure you’re not only ready to be a father emotionally, but financially as well.
