13 weeks pregnant - second trimester

Most comfortable period of pregnancy?

Welcome to the second trimester! This is usually the easiest and most comfortable period of pregnancy as the initial fatigue and moodiness is over for the mother, and she’s not getting very big and obvious yet.

What’s Going on with the Baby

Baby teeth

During this week, all twenty baby teeth have already formed under the gums. Both your baby and the placenta will each weigh about 28 grams. The pancreas is now secreting insulin, and the vocal cords develop. The baby’s intestines are now in the abdomen and out of the umbilical cord. The villi are also developing in the intestines, which helps in peristalsis.

What’s Going on with Mommy

Expansion of the uterus

You will begin to regain the energy you lost during the first three months of pregnancy, so you’ll be tempted to be up and about. However, you may notice that you now tire more easily compared to your pre-pregnancy days. This is quite normal. You may now feel a painful sensation in your abdomen due to the expansion of the uterus. This is called “round ligament pain.” The best way to deal with it is just to rest, but if it’s getting too painful and is accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting or bleeding, you must consult your doctor.

Exercise program

Since your energy is back, it will be easier for you to continue with your exercise program. Talk to your doctor about it, although usually walking is the recommended form of exercise for pregnant women.

Now for Daddy

Your partner will surely appreciate if you join her in one of her walks. This will keep not only both of you physically fit, but your little baby as well. Since she is also feeling better, why not take her to a nice dinner to celebrate the baby? She will surely appreciate the gesture.
