Choosing a baby’s name

Religious names.

Christian, Muslim and many other religious parents may wish to choose a name that reflects their religion or a special person within that religion.

Using their parent’s name.

This is a more traditional method of naming your child. Many parents use their own parents name to name their child, or make take the name from their grandparent’s name.

Many families who use this method often end up with their first born son being called the same as the previous first born and so forth and therefore to differentiate a number is placed after the surname.

How the name sounds with the surname.

Some first names and the second name i.e. surname just don’t sound right together. Once you have decided on a name say it over with the surname a number of times and see how it sounds.  Take care in getting two or even three names that sound good together.

Top ten check list when helping decide on choosing a name.

  1. Confirm what spelling of the name you wish your child to be called by. Remember there are lots of geographical variations of spelling and what looks correct to you may be spelt differently elsewhere.
  2. If deciding on one of the more commonly used names just remember that your child may be one of five jacks within his class at school!
  3. Make sure that both you and your partner agree on the choice of name
  4. After deciding on a name, say it together with the surname to ensure that it sounds good together.
  5. Consult with other family members and enlist their help and ideas. This will also ensure there are no family arguments or fallouts as can often happen as they will have been involved in the decision process from the beginning.
  6. Decide if you will be having a middle name or middle names.  This can assist in placating other family members who may feel aggrieved with your choice of name!
  7. Remember what is fashionable today may not be so fashionable in ten or twenty years time. A name is for life not just a period of time!
  8. A quirky name may be cool and differentiate your child from the ordinary but remember it’s your child that has to live with it…not you!
  9. Foreign sounding names may seem to give your child a bit of mystique but first confirm how to spell it and how to say it! Make it easy for everyone else or you may find out that the name is shortened to suit everyone else not including you!
  10. HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE NAME…JUST INCASE...
