Breast milk is a natural form of nutrition for your baby. It provides carbohydrate, protein, vitamins and fat. It is also a good source of digestive enzymes. Breast milk also has vital anti bodies that may help the baby resist infections.
Cow milk is unsuitable for infants below one year. A child may become allergic to milk products if this is not followed.
There are many milk formulas that are suitable for mothers who are not going to breast feed. You should get one fortified with carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins.
The mother’s breast milk should establish within the first few days after the birth. It should take around a minute for the baby to stimulate and realise what they are required to do. The baby may need 20 minutes to feed so swapping around after tens minutes to the other breast can be a good idea and ensures an even dispersal of milk from each breast.
If it is very hard to overfeed a baby who is being fed on breast milk and it is not necessary for the baby to be given any form of vitamin supplements as breast milk contains all that is required for a healthy baby.
